Useful tree surgery terms

Sometimes us tree surgeons will use terms that may not make too much sense to our clients. So, we have written a useful guide below:

  • Tree Crown - We usually refer to the top of the tree as the crown.
  • Tree Crown Reduction - By reducing the height and side branches proportionally, we aim to recreate a smaller version of the tree.
  • Tree Crown Thinning - Selective removal of inner branches to thin the density of the crown while leaving the height and spread of the tree unaffected.
  • Tree Crown Lifting - Removing lower branches and increasing the vertical height clearance beneath the tree's canopy.
  • Pollarding - Initially, it is the removal of most or nearly all of the crown into a new framework of branches. Regrowth is usually very dense and so the tree will need to be regularly maintained.
  • Tree Felling - This is the act of cutting a tree at ground level to allow it to fall, leaving a stump in the ground.
  • Tree Sectional dismantling - Trees that are in confined areas that cannot be felled, must be safely dismantled. Sections are lowered with ropes, or safe free fall methods are used, until only a stump remains.
  • Stump Grinding - We will use machinery to grind down a stump to below ground level to remove it.
